I’m not the biggest soup guy but I can appreciate a good soup. While I’m a fan of the Potbelly’s sandwiches, and will likely post about one in a few weeks, I’m most likely never ordering this soup again. The reason I give soup a ton of flack is that it is a dish that if done lazily can be completely ruined or dull. This potato soup is something you’d get from the set of Oliver Twist, it is a very bland potato soup that is more runny than creamy. I don’t know if this was the desired consistency but a thicker soup might have been a better choice to make up for the flavor profile.
While I stated it was a runny it wasn’t watery and more consistency than a chicken broth, but not by much. The bacon pieces were the highlight but not by much and the green onion was a bit of a bewildering taste compared to the rest of the soup’s components.
Potatoes are one of the easiest things to install flavor into. Soup is a mishmash of ingredients that make a liquid dish with different flavor profiles from all over the taste spectrum. Somehow none of this translated to this soup. The green onion feels like an alien in the dish, the bacon is depressing, and the potato is bland. There isn’t a kick to this soup, or even a tap.
Strongest Flavor: Potato
Weakest Flavor: Green Onion
Final Verdict: D
